Six years, one profit: how Mox got there

Standard Chartered's Hong Kong digital bank turns a profit, ZA Bank's fees jump, and how to build wealth income on top of deposits.

1. The Big One: Mox, the slow road to the black

The story. Mox launched in Hong Kong in 2020, backed by Standard Chartered. It broke even in Q1 2026, then posted its first interim profit (Mox, 30 Sep 2026).

The numbers (H1 2026) (same source):

  • Profit before tax of HK$8.63M.
  • Operating income HK$513M, up 69%; net interest income HK$452M, up 52%.
  • Deposits HK$20.9B; close to 800,000 customers, which Mox puts at about 15% of Hong Kong's bankable population.
  • Card spend up 33%. Its credit card book is the seventh-largest among Hong Kong retail banks.

Our read (opinion). The profit is tiny, but where it comes from matters. Most income is interest, earned by lending a sticky deposit base out through cards. That is a familiar bank model running on an app. The harder test is H2: Mox itself says there is "more work ahead" to keep it up all year.

2. The Scout

Three bets banks and challengers are making right now, and what they tell you.

  • ZA Bank leans on fees (APAC). Net profit rose 44% to HK$70.6M in H1 2026. Fee and commission income jumped 76% to HK$123M on wealth growth (ZA Bank, 30 Sep 2026). What it tells you: Hong Kong digital banks are chasing fee income, not just spread.
  • Al Rajhi keeps compounding (Middle East). Net income after zakat hit SAR 7.0B in Q2 2026, up 14% (Al Rajhi). What it tells you: the incumbent in the Saudi retail market is still growing at challenger pace.
  • Wise sells speed (Europe). 75% of its Q4 FY26 transfers (to March 2026) were instant, up from 65% a year earlier (Wise). What it tells you: in payments, settlement speed is now the product.

3. The Playbook: Wealth on top of deposits

What it is. Once customers park cash with you, offer them investments and insurance. That turns balances into fee income that doesn't rise and fall with rates. Emirates NBD grew non-funded income 25% in H1 2026 (Emirates NBD).

How it runs. Start with low-minimum funds inside the app. Add simple protection products at moments such as booking travel. Price clearly, then cross-sell from the savings screen.

Your move. Find the share of your deposit customers who hold any investment product with you. If it's in single digits, that gap is your target.

APAC angle. Mox Invest AUM doubled year on year in H1 2026 and investment revenue rose 75% (Mox).
